The Munich CCP and its Relevance for Provenance Research Today

Leitung: Anna-Lena Schneider, München

Die Führung findet in englischer Sprache statt.

In June 1945, the American Military Government established the Central Art Collecting Point (CCP) in the building that today houses the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte. The CCP’s primary mission was the restitution of artworks looted by the Nazi regime across Europe during the Second World War to their rightful owners. Art history books confiscated by the CCP from Nazi organizations and compromised individuals were subsequently used to support this work and today form the foundation of the institute’s library. The photographic collection was assembled in a similar manner. Over the past decade, these holdings have been continuously expanded, most notably through the acquisition of Munich art trade sources. This material continuity provides an exceptional basis for contemporary provenance research; at the same time, it calls for critical examination and contextualization. The tour offers an introduction to the history of the building as the former CCP and an overview of the art market sources preserved at the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte.

Treffpunkt: Raum 110 (1. OG) im Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte, Katharina-von-Bora-Str. 10
